Black Tailed Prairie Dogs, Devils Tower National Monument, Wyoming.

Prairie dogs greet each other by touching teeth, which for all the world resembles kissing.

I spent hours watching them at Devils Tower, and many more hours watching them in their enormous towns at Wind Cave and Badlands National Parks in South Dakota.

Although they're rodents, the "dog" name comes from their alarm calls, which resound whenever danger is spotted...which is often, since they're near the base of a lot of food chains. They do sound a bit like a yappy little canine.

They are just a blast, aren't they?
What really blew me away is just how big some of the prairie dog towns were...the ones at Badlands and at Wind Cave stretched over huge areas. I have no idea how many prairie dogs inhabited them, but they were popping up as far as the eye could see.
I didn't manage to get a picture, but it was interesting watching them interact with buffalo grazing through their towns...indignant isn't the word. Another cool thing that I saw several times is their jump/yip behavior, which I didn't catch an image of, but really enjoyed. They're like mini-cheerleaders.

I made this image about an hour after sunrise...prairie dogs are late risers...they seemingly like the morning dew to wear off a bit before they come above ground...they're super cute and really interesting to observe with all their social interactions...including the famous "kissing"
